Why We Spend So Much On Botox

By Marla Nordina

These days we live in a world where external appearances seem to create first impressions. People will do practically anything to try to look younger, like they did many years earlier. Wrinkles and lines on the face are an unsightly and unwelcome sign of ageing, and many people are turning to the idea of getting injections of botox in order to help renew skin that is getting older looking.

In the past, improving one's appearance was all about getting some form of plastic surgery that actually involved one to go under the knife. The healing process from such an operation can go on for weeks. The positive effects can take even more time, possibly months. Procedures like this are no longer the only option, because of the use of botox treatments. Recent studies in 2012 show that less invasive treatments such as botox injections are increasing, and more invasive plastic surgery is being chosen less often, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Why is this the case?

Plastic surgery is much more expensive, so botox gives someone with a lower economic status the ability to get treatments. Complex cosmetic surgeries are just too expensive these days, and it comes as no surprise that the cheaper, safe and extremely effective botox injections are becoming more and more popular.

However, it does appear that the entire 'botox culture' seems to have been taken on by members of a more affluent society. Media loves to print stories about famous people who appear to have had botox treatments.

How did botox get to be so mainstream?

There is no doubt that botox has pretty much taken the world of cosmetic surgery by storm. The ease of administration, the absence of in-hospital stay for the procedure, its effects and its low cost make it an attractive option when it comes to treating fine lines and wrinkles. These type of injections are being used now for conditions such as spastic paraplegias, blepharospasms, and muscle spasms, as well as for cosmetic purposes.

The effects can last for months and are obvious and recognisable. Many people's confidence is boosted significantly by having these treatments, and they usually tell family and friends to have it done as well.

Botox makes such a huge difference in the lives of those who get the treatments that they are visibly happier and feel more confident, and because of this, more and more people are giving botox a try.
