Post Pregnancy Weight Loss Challenges

By Trishia Serinton

Pregnancy will always cause women to gain weight, it's a natural part of the process. There is extra fat deposits around the mid-section of the mother during pregnancy which is referred to as 'baby weight', and of course while pregnant, the baby's weight is also a big factor. Losing this weight that has been gained following the delivery of a baby can be quite a task. If the mother had some extra weight before pregnancy, it can actually make the process even tougher.

Below, we will be discussing some of the basic ways to get rid of unwanted weight after a mother has delivered her baby.

1. Keep hydrated

Drink plenty of water after pregnancy to make sure that dehydration is not an issue. The extra liquid that you consume will also contribute to a fuller feeling in the stomach, which also helps some to avoid eating too much food. Don't over-do it though, drink only what your body craves.

2. Do not have overly strict diets

It seems counter-intuitive, but breast milk needs to be replenished from the food you eat, and when it is not sufficient, the nutrients to the baby may not be rich enough. Weight loss is thought to be more healthy when it is done in a steady and slower pace, instead of trying to drop a lot of weight in a short period of time. Losing weight the healthy way and getting all of the proper nutrients can be aided greatly by eating fruits and vegetables frequently.

3. Exercise regularly

Yes, regular exercise still works! Cardiovascular training such as aerobics and even strength exercises can help burn calories while maintaining muscle mass and bone strength. Exercises can include a brisk walk, jogging, swimming and cross-training. Mood is greatly affected by exercise as well, due to the release of endorphins. When the new mother uses exercise to lose weight, it has the added benefit of helping to reduce stress levels. Before anyone begins a new exercise program, it is important to seek the advice of a doctor, to ensure it is safe.

4. Breastfeeding should be continued

Essential fats and nutrients are provided to the baby from breastfeeding, these give the baby the right amount of nutrition and helps to enhance the immune system. At this time, the full effects that breastfeeding has on weight loss can not be truly determined. Even if it doesn't, it is no reason to stop breastfeeding an infant.

5. Rest is important

The body goes through plenty of changes during a pregnancy, and afterwards, taking care of a newborn can be stressful. When a new mother is able to get 7 hours or more of sleep every night, research has shown that this contributes to helping lose weight from the pregnancy.

Conclusion

A new mother can use these simple techniques to effectively lose the weight that the pregnancy has caused for them.
