Chemical Peels for Treating Acne

By Marlene Ataine

Almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point, in some it can be mild with just a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often. However acne can be more severe in other teenagers, giving rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, and in more severe cases larger red, inflamed spots called cysts. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Acne is not dangerous, but can leave skin scars. Human skin has pores (tiny holes) which connect to oil glands located under the skin. Follicles are like small canals that connect the pores to the glands. An oily liquid called sebum is produced in these glands. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. From each follicle a small hair grows through the skin. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Acne is common in teenagers as the hormonal changes during puberty can cause excess oils in the skin. However it is not just teenagers who suffer from acne, adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne.

A hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) is the cause of some adult acne. Another common cause of breakouts is an imbalance in both male and and female hormones called estrogen. During pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, this can happen to women. Some medications, such as corticosteroids, and cosmetics can also contribute to the development of acne.

A very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne is a chemical peel. Chemical peels work by exfoliating the skin; this removes dead skin cells which have clogged the pores, and cleanses the skin of the dirt. The formation of acne pimples and spots is reduced. Skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne may also be helped by chemical peels.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. They are also a very safe treatment for acne. When applied to the affected areas, superficial chemical skin peels remove the dead skin cells by exfoliating and cleansing the top layers of the skin. A course of six peels, spaced apart by one week minimum, is usually recommended. With this method, you will notice the skin texture improves and the amount of acne breakouts is visibly reduced.

Only a credible skin care clinic should be approached for your acne treatment chemical peel. Before you have chemical peels to treat your acne, obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type by consulting a reputable clinic.
