Aging Skin and Procedures that Help

By Stina Delance

Taking certain preventative measures and taking good care of your health will serve you well. All of us are subject to the effects of aging, although we can make these effects less prevalent when we apply proper care to ourselves. A healthy and active lifestyle should be a given, and in addition to this, treatments such as Photofacial, Botox, and chemical peels and facelifts can make the skin look more youthful. Proper skin care is important at all times, and this includes during a cosmetic treatment, and immediately before and after.

Minimizing sun exposure is the single most important and effective measure you can take to prevent your skin from looking aged. Understand that both the sun and tanning salons expose you to harmful ultraviolet (UV) light, which causes the bulk of damage for most people with aging skin. Sunscreen is important to apply to the skin because we may not notice the damage that the sun does to our skin, as it accumulates over time slowly.

Skin that is well hydrated looks more youthful and healthy. Applying moisturizer to the facial skin every day will do a good job of keeping the top layers of the skin hydrated.

Our diet has a real effect on our skin's appearance. Essential fatty acids are required, such as omega 3 and omega 6, to maintain optimal skin function and appearance. Flax seed oil is a good source of this, as well as other foods like fish or walnuts. For many people, their diets include most of what they need in this area, and the skin gets most of the essential fatty acids that it requires. White breads should be avoided mostly, and whole wheat grain breads should be preferred. Eat fruits and vegetables, non-saturated fats, and low-fat dairy products. Use common sense and the advice of your doctor or dietitian. The overall health that you enjoy will increase when you have a good diet, and the skin will look younger for longer.

Natural enzymes are present in skin, and they work to repair damage that skin takes. Skin will look younger for longer as these repair the damage we take from the sun, but they can only do so much as some aging happens no matter what. Tobacco products such as cigarettes contain toxins and free radicals that kill these helpful enzymes, and will also destroy collagen and elastin which keep skin more tight and youthful looking. Those who choose to smoke cigarettes should take note that aging is sped up with each cigarette smoked. Make sure you do your best to stop smoking. Skin will stop aging as quickly, and there are many other health benefits that will result from this.

Acne is something that affects different people in different amounts. We all know that it doesn't look good and can leave behind permanent scars. Consult a dermatologist to help get your acne under control. Younger looking skin can be maintained longer when the scars from acne are not allowed to develop in the first place. A physician will work with a patient to find the acne treatment that will benefit them the most. For those with more serious problems, a chemical peel is an option for acne, and this can be assessed and administered by a cosmetic surgeon.
